There are Bigger Fish to Fry

I am not a regular listener of podcaster Wanda Wisdom (Bradley Traynor) as I used to. Since the Feast of Fools podcast is in hiatus, I decided to give Wanda’s show a chance. Brad does two shoes for Lavender Media in Minneapolis, Big Gay News and Lucky Bitch Radio, as part of Big Gay News he mentioned the fact that although alleged censorship of LGBT books is a legitimate issue people are getting hurt and killed for the simple fact for being queer.

First in Iraq, people are being systematically executed for being gay in Iraq, even though we helped liberate this nation from Saddam Hussein we still have not liberated the nation from tyranny for all Iraqis. I applaud organizations such as GOP Proud for helping to bring forth awareness of this issue in one of their recent press releases by mentioning that we should advocate for human rights for all.

Then in Massachusetts, a place where you would not expect a person to be beaten up and disfigured for being gay.  Justin Goodwin got the unfortunate beating from two men in their twenties where the victim will likely be deaf in one ear and blind in one eye because of the malice and prejudice the men had.

Of course we should not give up the frivolous news stories that you might read on Perez Hilton or what outfit Britney Spears might wear on her world tour. However we should be aware that the world is not perfect and there is still darkness in the world around us. Get active, visit sites such as Amnesty International, the Task Force and the Human Rights Campaign, then enjoy your bread and circuses we got to leave this world a better place for the next generation.

The Tea Party Movement Is Not a Joke

I am proud of the people across the nation who demonstrated against government waste on Tax Day. Anderson Cooper and Rachael Maddow may make jokes about the tea party events by mentioning the double entendre of tea bagging. Geeks who have XBOX 360’s quite understand what these commentators are making the reference to especially when you play Halo 3.

The left thinks these activists are just whiny upper crust folk who do not want to pay for government where Rachael Maddow exclaims these people have their events at public parks and have police watch over the event which are government funded and are perceived to be freeloading hypocrites . Most of the activists are not looking to be free loaders, they just want government to be operated responsibly.

The left thinks that the tea party movement is nothing more than an astro-turf campaign. However the grassroots movements of the left wing are funded by their own sugar daddies such as George Soros. Money is money, if right winged sugar daddies want to support us, so be it.

The tea party movement is not a Republican movement, but its a movement of the grass-roots. Rachael Maddow may make light of the Tea Party movement with its not as spectacular attendance, but it was just as attended as the Post Proposition 8 rallies across the nation last November.

Of course Republicans spent irresponsibly, voters punished the party big time in 2006 causing the Democratic Party to replace many long time Republican legislators. However the party of President Obama is doing a better job at spending the money we do not have like there is no tomorrow. Even without the war in Iraq and Afghanistan, President Obama, Senator Harry Reid and House Speaker Pelosi have mortgaged our great grandchildren to debit.

Middle America was not against a stimulus, but we needed to take the time to make sure we were not destroying our nation in the quest of saving it. Many of us are not rabid for limited government, but we know the difference between too much governmental intervention and too little government.

Yes, it was President Bush who started this madness. However the blame is also on the Democratic Party. And as Americans we need to stand up for what is right and keep on fighting until the job is done.

Day Of Silence Is Vital

The fundamentalists are afraid about the annual Day of Silence event, an event focused on awareness of the harassment and bullying of LGBT youth. Students should be free to be who they are without the fear of harassment or intimidation. The psychological terrorism of bullies only prevents students from getting the education that they are entitled to. Students may be raised with values and traditions from their families, however they should learn to let students live and let live and learn that society is not a filtered lens that they may have been conditioned with.

Students are what they are, people do not take lessons on being straight or gay. The objective of organizations such as the Campaign for California Families and the Alliance Defense Fund is to spread ignorance, prejudice and fear so they can have a boogeyman in the gay community to raise money for their organizations.

Schools should not be used as a political proving ground for fundamentalists or even homosexuals. However student initiated actions such as the Day of Silence is vital and needed to bring forth awareness of the issue of harassment and bullying of students. We need a warm and open environment for all students no matter what their sexuality or religion might be.

I had to deal with a bully where I had to be evasive by going to school very early by choosing an esoteric path to school and when I had a class where my bully was in the same building I stormed out of class so we would not have to cross paths. Worrying about this individual added extra stress to my senior year about ten years ago from today. I was closeted back then and did not radiate anything. However my bully probably had very good gaydar.

Straight, gay or in-between we should all share solidarity together so we can make sure that future generations of students especially in Junior High and High School can learn and be free from intimidation. Even though I have graduated long time ago, I want to help change the culture so we can have hope not fear.

Proposition 103 is at risk. Contact Congressman Baca Today!

The reforms passed by the voters in California are in danger of being eliminated thanks to Congressman Royce of Orange County and Congresswoman Bean of Pennsylvania. Luckily for us in San Bernardino County, we have a congressman on this key sub committee of Financial Services that could be influential in sinking this plan the insurance industry dreams for.

Insurance companies want to have it where state regulations to be eliminated because in fact federal law supersedes state law. Insurance companies do not want to deal with the regulations and protections that states such as California give to consumers.

The Royce-Bean legislation is still in draft form, but with outcry from the constituents of the 43rd Congressional District perhaps the legislation can be nuked before it gets to the committee.

Although being on key committees does help in helping to get the campaign cash, hopefully the congressman can balance the interests of his constituents and industry at the same time.

Colorado Republican State Senator embarrasses party

In ColoradoPols.com it was posted that:

The Denver Post reports on initial passage today in the Senate of SB-88, which would extend limited health benefits to same-sex partners of Colorado state employees. Did you know, gentle reader, that the Bible declares homosexuality punishable by death?

Well, a State Senator did not want to support the bill because he did not want to reward people who violate biblical law and equated homosexuals as murderers.

Colorado Republicans are not having a good time right now, they lost a US Senate Seat, they lost the state legislature and a congressional seat. I decided to be an advice columnist helping their state chairman mend the damage.

Chairman Wadhams,

As a Republican and gay man from California, I would like to provide some advice on how to bring your party to the majority and the mainstream again. Be a party that unites ALL of Colorado and the nation as a while. Wonder why Congresswoman Musgrave lost in 2008, and your state party lost the governorship, a US Senate Seat and the state legislature.

Remarks from Senator Renfroe will only help the Democratic Party devour your state party and help fuel the liberals to gain bigger margins. Even if your members in the legislature have these views they need to be quiet so they don’t cause further losses towards irrelevance.

You got to be a party of the mainstream, not just James Dobson! Until this happens, do not expect to gain back the majority or even retain the US Senate seat our party still holds in 2010.

Best,

Matt Munson

Government money is not free

People were big for the bailout of banks, but they did not realize how government money has strings attached. Government wants to regulate the compensation of its executives in the companies it bought interests in, government wants to restrict the marketing practices where you can not name the stadium that was just built Big Bank Company Arena.

Nationalization of industries does have implications for freedom for individuals. Nationalization of our banks actually has bit New York state in the ass. New York State relied upon the big bonuses from these financial industry titans because they got taxed on these bonuses.  The limit from the government is going to do one very good thing, make business not willing to take governmental handouts.

When these financial industry businesses are suffering and they are crying for mercy it is understandable that we as taxpayers don’t want these businesses taking junkets at the Four Seasons or excessively spend money to redecorate their offices. These businesses choose to be enslaved by the government and they get to suffer the consequences.

Yes, I hear the arguments from Rush Limbaugh that these businesses should be left alone, and its agreeable that in fact, the new jets Citibank had ordered does employ people in the construction of these high ticket items. However corporations need to become more tactful in the era of a depressed economy because the demons of nationalization and socialism will come creeping close.

The solution is to increase the regulation of the financial industry so we would not have any of these problems we recently experienced while ending the micromanaging of the running of these institutions.

Bill Perkins full page advertisement hits close to home.

On page A9 on the Los Angeles Times on February 2nd, Bill Perkins from Texas published an advertisement asking people of California this question.

Question #3: Why is Senator Max Baucus (D-MT) Proposing to use your money to bail out Kohlberg Kravis Roberts &CO, Carlyle, Blackstone and other private equity firms?

It’s YOUR MONEY!!!

“The list of industries being bailed out by Congress may soon grow to include an unlikely one: private equity firms. Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus included language in the tax portion of the proposed stimulus package that would allow companies to defer income taxes triggered when they repurchase their own troubled debt at a discount.”

-WSJ Jan 28,2009

As an employee employed by a company owned by a private equity firm, I would like to
encourage our senators from California to lobby against Senator Baucus’s (D-MT) proposal to subsidize the losses from private equity firms with our tax money.

If we allow the government to bailout the losses from private equity firms, then we should at least offer strings attached such as making sure employees from their companies are not being cut and laid off so we can stimulate the economy with their wages. If employees are not working and earning wages, then we have no economic stimulus because our economy is driven from consumer spending.

If we are insisting on corporate welfare, at least it should go to the bottom as well as the top.

Picture ID should be mandated for credit cards.

I know the credit card industry wants to promote fast and instant payment with their products, but credit card fraud does hit close to home according to Los Angeles Times Business section columnist David Lazarus in Sunday’s paper. David was victim to a credit card theft at his local gym from either a fellow customer or an employee of the establishment.

Of course customers are protected from the fraud according to the credit card terms of service, but since banks are losing so much money due to the mortgage fiasco should they take a more proactive attempt at making sure fraud is least likely to happen? Since the economy is taking a nose dive unfortunately people are resorting to desperate measures to make a buck. If someone is spending 400.00 plus on a high ticket item at Target, it would be reassuring that the clerk double checks identification before the purchase gets finalized.

Regulation should not always be a quick fix solution to solve problems, but since banks are losing massive amounts of money they should repeal their ban on asking clerks for identification before a purchase is completed. It would save their credit card merchants and customers a whole lot of problems.

My Congressman Loves the Nanny State

Recently it has been announced that my congressman Joe Baca (D-San Bernardino) has introduced a new video game labeling bill (H.R 231) that requires an extra warning label for any game that is rated T or above to state the following:

WARNING: Excessive exposure to violent video games and other violent media has been linked to aggressive behavior.

However some games that are rated T (Teen), are not violent at all such as Gran Turismo – TV Top Gear and Singstar ABBA which makes the warning label that is required for this bill redundant and silly. This is one of the first things I have noticed that is seriously wrong with this bill. I know the congressman wants to make himself look good in front of the parents and grandparents of the 43rd Congressional District, but while this bill is in committee at least he should try to make it where only games that are actually violent should have the Consumer Product Safety Commission Regulation in it.

However we already do have a ratings system and its called the Entertainment Software Ratings Board and they been around for over fifteen years and they have done a decent job with rating electronic entertainment. Parents are already given the tools necessary to evaluate their children’s choices in the games that they play. Information is displayed at leading retailers and at the website for the ESRB.

Not all gamers are children and teenagers which video game regulation loving politicians would like to portray where the average gamer is 33 years old and becoming politically active thanks to organizations such as the Entertainment Consumers Association and the Video Game Voters Network. Stores self-regulate their sales of M (Mature) rated video games and if children are playing these games then parents either authorized the purchase or is just simply careless.

The best idea for Congressman Baca and his co-sponsor in the Republican Party Congressman Wolf of Virginia, is to simply embrace the ESRB ratings and help educate their constituents of their districts instead. Franking a newsletter to the constituents would be cheaper than adding a redundant regulation that will simply confuse consumers.

I made an attempt to contact the Congressman’s office about my concerns about this legislation. There was nothing really substantial from his office when one of his representatives contacted me, I just stated that if he insists on making this rather redundant bill he should at least get it made right by adding some of my suggestions.

It is unfortunate that our leaders are using popular media as a scapegoat for the problems that face us in society such as violence. Electronic entertainment is not the sole reason why some people choose to be violent in today’s society when we should investigate the other reasons first. We are America, we are not Australia and we should not enter the world of censorship and mandatory labeling of games. With an economy that is hurting we should avoid adding any new governmental programs that are already done effectively in the private sector such as ratings of electronic games.

If you care for freedom of expression and or limited government contact Congressman Baca and Congressman Wolf if you live in their districts as soon as you can.

Consumers will need to pay more to consume on their cards.

Recently many Americans have received the news that their credit card lender
has decided to increase their credit card interest rates to increase their
profitability on their end or to adapt to the challenging economic
environment. However by increasing the interest rates and minimum payments
is only going to make the problem worse with more consumers getting into
default.

Banks are in severe trouble due to their horrible decisions during the real
estate boom of the early decade and they want to recover as much revenue as
they possibly could. However with these banks being bailed out by the
federal government it seems the little guy is going to suffer.

Consumers are given the opportunity to write to disagree to the changes to
their standard APR and reject the revised APR. Doing so may close your
account, but this will help send a message to the banking industry that
nickel and diming your customers will only backfire in the long run.

We are living in a new economic time where credit will no longer be easy to
access as it used to be.  Maybe our grandparents actually did have useful
advice where we should live with as little debt as possible and if we cannot
afford something, we do without or save up until we do.
